Severn Trent Water is the world's fourth largest privately owned water company serving 8 million customers. It is part of the Severn Trent Group of companies; an international utility services and environmental solutions company. It is unusual for a UK water company in having no coastline hence the impact of the Urban Waste Water Directive is more limited. It does, of course, cover two major river basins as well as the large urban conglomeration that is the Midlands.

In 2006, with the arrival of a new CEO and the debacle of misreporting and fine by Ofwat, a new strategic direction was launched. Biffa, its waste management business was demerged and other some other non regulated businesses sold to support the strategy of focusing on water. Now its only significant non - regulated business is Severn Trent Services. Severn Trent is back on track with legacy issues resolved and stable performance despite the turbulent times. It now focuses on water only.

Severn Trent Water has been through significant organisational change and is shortly relocating its main headquarters to Coventry. It has a very focused management team that is responsible for improving efficiencies against 20 Key Performance Indicators, each of which is aligned with their long term strategy. OPA score is improving, they have moved up from 9th to 7th in 2009.
